Students learn the skills of computer mastery through
integrated interdisciplinary activities and research
projects. Computer lessons are designed to complement
and enhance topics and skills appropriate to each grade
level. Through team-teaching and planning, lessons are
created using a variety of software applications so
students can learn while integrating mathematics, science,
social studies, art, and language arts. Through cooperative
and independent work, students learn to help their peers
and manage their time for project completion. The Internet
and web based encyclopedias are used for research. The
introduction of long-distance learning using the Internet
has sparked great interest in many subjects on all grade
levels so students are actively engaged in making connections
to the real world as they research, read, write, and
share what they have learned. Lessons are designed and
introduced to enrich learning using a variety of software
applications, commands and computer terms. The following
are some of the programs now in use in the computer
lab:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Paint
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Publisher
- Microsoft Access
- Type to Learn
- Typing Pal Jr.
- Kidspiration
- Inspiration
- Understanding Math Series
- Discovery Science Series
These applications allow students to learn word processing,
desktop publishing, graphing, spreadsheets, databases
and more. As the students progress, their keyboarding
skills, motor skills and audo/visual skills are improved,
all while learning the content or theme of a curricular
lesson.
A variety of software is used to reinforce and teach
skills and content in reading, math, science, and
social studies. These students use word processing
and paint programs to write about and illustrate what
they have learned.
Our networked computer lab facility now includes new
IBM desktop computers, flat screens, interactive Smartboards
and a mobile laptop lab. The computer program has
branched out to become an integral, cohesive, building
spiral for continuity of learning in grades kindergarten
through eighth grade.
The
new computers were made possible through the generous
donations of parents and friends of Grace Day School!
