ASK US!
The following are a few of the most frequently asked questions. Please feel free to contact us for any additional information.
Is Grace Day School accredited?
Yes! It is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools. It is also a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools.
Is transportation available? How do students get their textbooks?
Bus transportation and textbooks are supplied by each student's own school district.
In addition to academic subjects, what other subjects are taught?
A fine and performing arts center and program allow children creative opportunities in art, instrumental and vocal music instruction, chorus, and drama. Playing fields outside and a newly renovated gymnasium inside provide many opportunities for physical education. In addition, weekly religious instruction and chapel services provide the underpinning for the ethical and moral training that is provided in our Christian setting.
How many classes per grade level are there and what size are the classes?
As of this September we have two classes per level for grades kindergarten, first and second. From grade three to eight, we have one class per level. In the bifurcated classes, our goal is to range between fourteen to eighteen students. In the departmentalized Grades 5-8, the maximum number of students is twenty-four. However, in these upper grades, math and writing classes are kept small in size to maximize the learning of all students. Normally these classes do not exceed 12 students.
How are the grades organized?
From kindergarten to fourth grade, the classes are homeroom based. Students spend the majority of their day with their homeroom teacher. However, they also participate in music, physical education, art, computer, library, religion, and French classes with special area teachers for these subjects. From fifth to eighth grade, the students are in a departmentalized setting. They have different teachers for each of the main subject areas. This allows us to have a specialist in each of the five main academic areas, French, social studies, mathematics, language arts and science.
In what extra-curricular activities can students participate?
After school activities for lower school children include participation in Brownies and Cub Scouts. Upper school students are invited to participate in the school band, orchestra and choir. They also play on a variety of sports teams competitively. We offer volleyball, soccer, girls and boy's basketball and coed track and field teams. Musical offerings include a Christmas band, choir and chorus show, as well as the kindergarten through second grade presentation of the Nativity story. The seventh and eighth students present a musical play each spring. The students also participate in a spring band, choir and chorus show. We also offer a Kids Care Club, a knitting club and Student Council for the upper school students.
What is the religious environment of the school?
Grace Day School is an Episcopalian school, which welcomes students of all races, colors, ethnic backgrounds and religions. We value the uniqueness of each individual and offer a Christian setting in which all students can thrive.
Are Grace students successful in gaining admission to the high schools of their choice?
Virtually 100% of our graduates are accepted to the high school of their choice. These schools primarily include the Catholic, Lutheran and independent schools located throughout Long Island.
